Designated Learning Institute (DLI)

Canada is the number one destination for more than half a million foreign pupils each year. It’s no wonder that Canadian universities attract so many international pupils.

Canada provides overseas students with a gateway to a world-class education and the professional growth opportunities that come with it. You may be able to remain and work in Canada as an international student, increasing your chances of becoming a legal citizen of this fantastic country.

The Postgraduate Work Visa Program is the most common route for doing so (PGWPP). The enrollment in a PGWPP-approved program or course at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is a crucial prerequisite for participation.

In other words, what exactly is a DLI?

Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) are schools recognised by the federal, regional, or municipal government of Canada as acceptable for foreign pupils to obtain Canadian academic credentials. That’s right, all levels of schooling are covered here.

There are currently over 1,500 DLIs in Canada, with the vast majority located in the provinces of Ontario, Québec, and British Columbia.

How Do I Find My DLI?

In Canada, DLIs are required to be listed on the government’s website, so you can look for yours there.

First Step: Pick Your Home Province/Territory

To begin, select the region where you wish to pursue higher education.

  1. 2. Search DLIs

You can carefully look through the DLIs directory, or you can use the search box to enter terms such as the location or the name of a Canadian institution or college. The items on the list are as follows:

  ● The name of the Designated Learning Institution;
  ● The number of the Designated Learning Institution;
  ● The City;
  ● The Location of the Campus;
  ● Whether or not it offers PGWP eligible programs

What is the PGWP?

Graduates of a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada are eligible to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to remain in the country and find gainful employment. This is highly sought after by recent grads because working in Canada for as little as a year qualifies them to file for permanent citizenship under the Canada Experience Class and other provincial nominee programmes (PNPs).

Step 3: Please record your DLI number.

Keep the DLI number handy; you’ll need it when applying for a student visa to Canada.

Where do I look up my school’s unique ID?

The DLI roster is maintained by the Canadian government and can be used to locate your institution’s unique DLI identifier. You’ll need that number when applying for a student visa, and it also appears on documents related to your studies.

Preparing DLIs for COVID-19

If they want to study in Canada, foreign students must attend a school that has developed a COVID-19 preparation plan. You are required to have a plan for a 14-day quarantine period, even if you believe you meet the criteria for a fully vaccinated traveller, because it: protects your health and the health.

The options as to whether or not you must undergo the mandatory 14-day confinement in Canada will be made by a border services official upon your arrival.

offers guidance and assistance in acquiring necessities such as food and medicine during a confinement. The importance of health coverage and maintaining good health in Canada.

Making the Decision to Attend a Canadian University

When you’ve settled on a specific Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada, you can then submit an application for a Canadian study pass. Choose a DLI that is PGWP-approved and has classes that are at least 8 months lengthy if you plan to remain and work in Canada after you graduate. This is especially essential if you are a COVID-19 student.
